Our background with food allergies.

It all started with milk and egg allergies with my oldest daughter. She was diagnosed when she was very young and we were given an EpiPen.

Milk and eggs are in EVERYTHING, and I found milk and egg very hard allergies to manage. Luckily, she outgrew those allergies around the age of 4, but not before we got a good taste of what it’s like to live with milk and egg allergies.

Her experience outgrowing milk and egg allergies also gave us experience with several oral food challenges in the office, because she failed one or two before passing.  Each time, we did an oral food challenge.

Then, just as my oldest daughter was outgrowing milk and egg allergies, my youngest was diagnosed with peanut and tree nut allergies. She also has a gluten intolerance.

We are in OIT, and after about 5 years, we have reached the point where she can tolerate traces of peanut and tree nuts.  At the time of recording, it was about a year ago when we reached that milestone.

So we have lived about 16 years where we could not tolerate traces of allergens so many of the strategies I teach are from these years.

This podcast will be for ANY anaphylactic food allergy. I may focus a little more on the top allergens, but I’m hoping that families with any anaphylactic food allergies and even celiac disease will get A LOT of value from this food allergy podcast.

Why I’m starting this food allergy podcast

Honestly, it’s because I felt like I failed as a food allergy mom. After all, I didn’t know what to do. Here’s the story.

It was many years ago now...

My 3-year-old had made a new friend and we were headed to a playdate.

I told the mom about my daughter’s severe allergies and prepped the allergy-safe snack that we would all share.  We had our epinephrine with us.

The first hour went like any playdate.  I chit-chatted with mom while the kids played in the playroom.  We were having fun.

But after a while, my daughter came and sat on my lap.  I wondered why she had left her friend and all the new toys.

But then I saw her face.

She was unrecognizable.  Her whole left side from her forehead to her chin was completely swollen.

At first, I thought she hit her head.  I couldn’t figure out what was happening.  By this time the other mom was alarmed too.  Then she said,

“Oh no.  My kids ate peanut butter in the playroom yesterday”

I finally started to clue in.  My daughter was having an allergic reaction.

🔥Alarms went off in my head.

Is my worst nightmare happening?  Is this anaphylaxis?  What do I do?  Do I use the EpiPen?

I was scared and my pulse was racing.  I quickly said we needed to go home and I could barely focus enough to drive the 7 blocks home.

When we got home, my daughter was still very swollen and didn’t want to leave my side.  I thought about using the EpiPen, but I just wasn’t sure if it was time to use it.

My memory is fuzzy, but luckily, after what seemed like days, my daughter’s face started looking more normal again.  It took several hours, but it did go away.  I still thank God for his grace and protection that day.

Now as I look back at that story from many years ago, I cringe (maybe you did too?).

I should have used the EpiPen FIRST and FAST

Unfortunately, the confusion and fear caused me to second-guess myself and what I needed to do because I didn't learn these skills growing up.

The food allergy life was all new to me.

And I know so many mamas are in the same boat.

Because how could you know these things without some guidance?

Unfortunately, food allergy moms aren't taught how to deal with...

  • feeling nervous to try new foods because you’re afraid there will be another allergy (or their sibling will have one).

  • advocating & getting others to take food allergies seriously or consistently including your child.

  • fearing daycare, school & letting someone else take care of your child.

  • hoping you or your child never have to use epinephrine and doubt yourself (or your child doubting) like I did.

  • avoiding vacations because they seem too hard, OR going and worrying the whole time and not enjoying it as much as you deserve to.

  • not knowing the safest ways to dine out so that you can model good behaviors for your child as they grow.

As you go through this food allergy journey, these are common problems and struggles.

So if you feel any of these, you are not alone, and you are NOT FAILING!

The problem is that without guidance, it takes way longer to stumble your way through it, and it can cause a lot of worry and stress in the meantime.

This is why I created this food allergy podcast to teach you how to improve your family's quality of life MUCH quicker than I had to.
