What If My Child Has Never Had A Severe Allergic Reaction - Does That Mean They Have Mild Allergies?

What if my food-allergy child has never had a severe allergic reaction?

When I was in grade 11 I had a car accident RIGHT in front of my high school. Don't worry, it wasn't a major accident so nobody was hurt; except my pride.

Of course, it happened right after school when there were plenty of kids around to see how mortified I was, and to make things even more embarrassing, I had 3 of my friends in the car with me.

And you guessed it, I was the one at fault. That's what I get for trying to do a U-turn in the middle of the street! I couldn't even say that it was because someone else wasn't paying attention.

So armed with a red face, a ticket, and a damaged car, I remember crying my eyes out. The only redeeming fact was that we were all wearing our seatbelts and nobody was hurt. I can't even imagine how horrible that would have been.

I guess after the tears dried and I could face my friends again, I could have said:

"Well, that was a mild accident. I guess I don't need to wear a seatbelt anymore since I've never had a bad accident."

BUT, you and I both know that would not make ANY sense!

I mean, anybody knows that just because it was a small accident, doesn't mean there won't be a bigger accident in the future.

❓So why do I tell this story that I would much rather leave in the recesses of forgotten memories?

Because many people act this way when it comes to food allergies. They think that because their child has never had a severe reaction, they never will.

FIRST OF ALL, I hope and pray that your food allergy child never has a severe reaction.

BUT, I need you to know that food allergy reactions ARE NOT predictable. They are the same as a car accident in that you never know how severe they will be at any time. This is why you and your child should ALWAYS have your allergy "seatbelts" on at all times and be prepared.

❤️ Make no mistake, I'm not telling you to be anxious or worried.

JUST prepared.

A few ways to be prepared, (even if your child has never had a severe allergic reaction) are:

  • always having an epinephrine injector with you at all times,

  • reading every ingredient label, every time (and never eating something with "may contain"),

  • watching for cross-contact, and

  • having and understanding your child's emergency plan.

So I ask you today. Are you living with your food allergy seatbelts in place? If not, how can you change that?
